Four Types of NCE Stations

ABOUT THE TYPES OF NONCOMMERCIAL RADIO STATIONS IN THE “KMA PUBLIC & NONCOMMERCIAL RADIO STATION DIRECTORY” [see kenmillsagency [dot] com]”

There are 1,158 noncommercial radio stations included in The Directory.  There are four major types of stations:

1. “Public radio” refers to stations that have full-time staff, professional fund raising and broadcast programming from national organizations such as NPR, PRI, APM, or WFMT. There are 425 public radio stations included in The Directory.

2. “Community radio” refers to stations that have some full-time staff but depend largely on volunteers.  These stations typically air music and talk programs mixed with selected national programs from Pacifica and other organizations. There are 143 community radio stations included in The Directory.

3. “College/Student radio” refers to stations that air programming by and for students and related communities. There are 211 college/student radio stations included in The Directory.

4. “Religious radio” refers to stations that broadcast programming intended to advocate or enhance certain religious beliefs and lifestyles. There are 380 religious radio stations included in The Directory.
